They observe, identify individuals engaging in suspicious behaviour, and intervene only when a theft has clearly been completed — at which point the legal threshold for detention has been met. The plainclothes model is most effective for stores with high professional theft exposure or where a uniformed presence would conflict with brand positioning.
Most effective retail security deployments combine both: a uniformed officer at the entrance (deterrence, bag checks, disturbance handling) and one or more plainclothes detectives on the floor. The ratio depends on store layout, product value, and incident history.
